Since I haven't posted in a while, I'll toss this picture at you. It is possibly the oldest sphinx statue that has been found. It is from some part of the Dynasty IV Pharaoh Djedefra's pyramid complex. His pyramid never got finished. And this might be his wife as sphinx. It is female because it was painted yellow. I need to look at more details about this one, but I haven't had time yet. The eyes look old, big round eyes are very old. I think it might be older that Fourth Dynasty because of the eyes, but nobody has suggested that, so I'm probably wrong. But compare the eyes to those of Djedefra himself. I'm trying to get better pictures of it so I can see the fingers and under the front paws and the mane area clearer and the nape of the neck. Wish me luck. Or let me know if you find any better pictures.

Well, it would be at least gendered female any way. I remember a lecture once about the remains found of the Mixtecs in Monte Alban. We could argue about the biological sex all we wanted to, but what was incontrovertible is that the remains were gendered female by their atire.
